MLB Opening Day Disrupted by Illegal Drone Flight

Lone Star Drone

Know the Rules and Use Common Sense!

A recent incident during the Oakland Athletics' home opener at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento underscores the critical importance of adhering to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations concerning drone flights over professional sports venues. In the seventh inning, a drone entered the stadium's airspace, causing a delay as Athletics bat boy Stewart Thalblum intervened to neutralize the device. The video of the incident can be found at the end of this post.

FAA Regulations on Drones Near Stadiums

The FAA enforces strict no-fly zones around stadiums during major sporting events to ensure public safety. Specifically, drone operations are prohibited within a 3-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level of stadiums with a seating capacity of 30,000 or more. This restriction is active from one hour before until one hour after events such as Major League Baseball (MLB) games, National Football League (NFL) games, NCAA Division I football games, and major motor speedway events.

Safety Concerns and Common Sense

Flying drones over crowded stadiums poses significant safety risks. In the event of a malfunction or loss of control, a drone can cause injuries to spectators, disrupt the event, and lead to mass panic. Beyond legal compliance, operators must exercise common sense and prioritize the well-being of individuals when considering drone flights near large gatherings.

Potential Penalties for Violations

Violating FAA regulations regarding drone operations near stadiums can result in severe consequences, including:

  • Civil Penalties: Operators may face substantial fines for unauthorized flights in restricted areas.

  • Criminal Charges: Reckless operation of drones that endangers the safety of the national airspace can lead to criminal prosecution.

  • Confiscation of Equipment: Law enforcement agencies have the authority to confiscate drones operated in violation of FAA regulations.

Commitment to Responsible Drone Use

At Lone Star Drone, we are dedicated to promoting the safe and lawful use of drone technology. We urge all operators to familiarize themselves with FAA regulations, exercise caution, and respect no-fly zones, especially around professional sports venues and large public gatherings. By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure the safety of the public and the integrity of our airspace.
